Distance Report: An Amateur Take

The USGA and R&A released their Distance Report this week and their stance and results got me thinking. What was their stance you ask? That golf has a distance problem. Guys are hitting the ball too far. Golf courses are having to lengthen holes to accommodate the big guns.  And they’re only going to get longer if the governing bodies don’t make moves such as rules changes or equipment restrictions.

So how does this effect us hacks? It doesn’t. But of course I still have an opinion on the matter. I love watching guys bomb the ball. I also LOVE the US Open. That being said, I think they should just make the courses harder. Tighten the fairways. Grow out the rough. Make the greens rock hard. Ok, so you can hit a drive 350. Try playing a 100 yard shot out of this if you miss the fairway by a yard.

That’s the golf I want to watch. I want them to be looking for their balls like this.

I want leaderboards like this.

Golf doesn’t have a distance problem. We don’t need to make these guys hit it shorter. We need to make the courses harder. They may hate those impossible US Open setups but they’re getting paid a pretty penny to play well. Let’s tighten those fairways. Let’s get that rough thicccccc. Let’s get those greens rock hard. Lets reward the players if they can hit it 350 and keep it in a 15 yard wide fairway. And guess what. If you’re outside the fairway. You’re fucked. That’s what I want. Equipment changes are for the birds. Make golf hard again. Do it for the people.
