A Tony Finau Loss at the Waste Management Phoenix Open

Posted by Sonny on

Man was it tough watching Tony Finau lose the way he did yesterday. I know I say this a lot but you just REALLY hate to see it (HTSI). The guy played so solid all week. 69, 66, 62, 70. And looking back at Sundays round has to leave a bad taste in his mouth. Two bogeys all week and both in the final round. He easily could have shaved 3 shots off yesterday. This tournament was his to lose. He’ll remember this one as one he gave away.

Now I’m not saying Webb Simpson (congrats) got lucky or anything like that. There’s not much else to say other than Tony blew it a little at the end and Webb had a strong finish. Draining pretty much the same putt with the same pressure 30 minutes apart from each other? Exhausting. I would have passed out twice. But let’s not forget, Webb has 6 wins on tour including a US open. He’s been there before.

Speaking of wins, Tony is going to have a few this year. I personally don’t think he’s confident enough with the putter to win a major. Didn’t look like that claw grip held up under the pressure yesterday. But he will get his in 2020. Really wanted this one for him though. Oh well. On to the next.

Fun Facts from the Waste Management:

-Longest Drive: 429 yards by Lanto Griffin (holy shit)

-Tommy Fleetwood has now made 31 cuts in a row. (Unreal)

-Colin Morikawa has 19 PGA Tour starts. Two as an amateur. He’s made 18 cuts in a row. His only missed cut was in 2016 at the Safeway Open. He was a 19 year old amateur.

So in short, these guys are good.
